What’s UP! - Frequently Asked Questions
1. Why do my products separate?
Your products separate because at UP! Organics we don’t add emulsifiers or other unnecessary fillers that result in you paying for ingredients that have no health value for your skin and many of them are toxic and harmful. We think you’d rather shake the bottle than get less good stuff in there. Yes?
2. What is phenoxyethanol?
Notice the no-no in the word…It is a chemical preservative that is being used instead of the paraben family (ethyl, methyl, propyl parabens) which have received bad press for being found in tumors and being hormone disrupting. According the FDA, phenoxyethanol—even though it is approved for use in cosmetics under 1%, “…can depress the central nervous system and may cause vomiting and diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration in infants"
NOTE: We want our customers and the general consumer to understand and agree that skin care should expire. If your skin care is real and healthy, then it is just like food for your skin. Only it lasts a lot longer than a jug of soymilk or loaf of sprouted bread. At UP! we use lots of essential oils, Vit E, and other antioxidant ingredients that are excellent for cell regeneration and skin health. Our products expire in 6 months to one year. If you are not going to use a 2 oz. product within 6 months, then you really shouldn’t buy it in the first place. Our products were meant to be used fresh and often—this results in the best nutritional results for your skin. We are committed to offering you the best and cleanest skin care on the planet. We just ask that you use them UP!
3. How do essential oils work?
Essential oils are nature’s gift to humans. They have been considered sacred and have been traded internationally for thousands of years. EO’s are the essence of the plant—leaves, stems, and buds—that are pressed out using various methods. They offer spiritual, physical and medicinal properties. For example, Helichrysum is used on the skin for abscesses, acne, boils, eczema, wounds, etc. For the respiratory system it is good for asthma, bronchitis and for the nervous system it is good for depression, stress & neuralgia.
Essential oils are the medicine of the past, present and future. All life on Earth was put here to help us live healthy, long lives. Chemicals are toxic and create disease and shortened life span. That’s why we are here and want everyone to Wake UP! to using only 100% pure and natural products, on your skin and in your body.
4. If you are so keen on natural stuff, why do you use plastic and tin containers?
This is the best question ever… My preference is not to use plastic. Tin is the single most recycled product of all, so please recycle yours. All of the plastic we use is recyclable with #1 or #2 so please recycle them, too.
Plastic is a petroleum derivative and is not biodegradable (some are). Out of the six products we launched three of them are in glass. Our labels are made of paper instead of plastic or polymer.
- Essential oils sometimes react with the lid and glass container making it impossible to use glass.
- Foaming soap has to be in plastic. There are no foaming glass bottles. However, the foaming mechanism makes the product last a lot longer so you use fewer bottles so save plastic and money!
- Fix UP! Cream is a sports and active/travel product and I really wanted it to be lightweight. There was not a cobalt blue glass jar in 2 oz. available. And the 1.75 oz. was too heavy (and too small) for backpacking, climbing, etc.
- UP! offers the Clean UP! with the plastic spray bottle and this can be reused over and over so you are saving dozens of plastic bottles by buying Clean UP! And it is in glass. Plus you save trips to the store to buy more green cleaner.
I can promise you that I am aware of every piece of plastic that I touch and use. I try not to get negative about it but rather fiendishly recycle and choose not to take new plastic bags at the store, etc. I believe that going forward, as long as consumers continue to make sustainable votes with their dollars, the trend will be toward biodegradable packaging. Thanks for asking!
5. How do I know if my product is expired?
Most of them will have a USE BY date on the bottle. If not, then it’s easy…if it smells good it is good. If it smells “off”, “flat” or “dead” then it is old, but by no means is it harmful.
6. Why do some natural skin care products have mold on them?
This is easy to answer…because they are natural. Mold is everywhere. You think that is air you are breathing…actually you are breathing in mold. Fresh product shouldn’t mold unless it has been repeatedly contaminated with bacteria such as dirty fingers in the jar. The mold is NOT an indication that the product is bad. Just wipe it off. Products that contain a water ingredient such as aloe vera, are more prone to mold. Wax and oil based products should never mold. And pure essential oil products such as Clean UP! will never mold. If you experience mold, please return your product to us. We will give you a new one or refund your money.
